Pocatello, Idaho

Pocatello, Idaho

Founded in 1889, Pocatello was known as the "Gateway to the Northwest". As pioneers, gold miners and settlers traveled the Oregon Trail, they passed through the Portneuf Gap south of town. Stage and freight lines and the railroad soon followed, turning the community into a trade center and transportation junction. The name "Pocatello" is named after the Shoshone Tribe chief of the same name who granted the railroad a right-of-way through the Fort Hall Indian ReservationShoshone and Bannock Indian tribes inhabited southeastern Idaho for hundreds of years before the epic trek by Lewis and Clark across Idaho in 1805. Their reports of the many riches of the region attracted fur trappers and traders to southeastern Idaho.

Today, Pocatello is the 5th largest city in Idaho, with a population of over 55,000 people. It is the county seat and largest city in Bannock County and home to Idaho State University and the Pocatello Regional Airport.

Pocatello is the closest city to where I live in my very rural area. I travel there a couple times a week for shopping and business. Even though the city is growing and adding new construction projects all of the time, there is a section of the city that is preserved in it's history, culture and original architecture "called Old Town." I like this area because it has that classic "small town" atmosphere. Old homes fill the area and small shops line Main Street. There is always something to do there with the many events they have, including the "Art Walk" which takes place monthly during the Summer months and the weekly Farmer's Market.
